JJ Nissen 1989 Bobby Bonilla baseball card

I loved Bobby Bonilla, I thought he was going to be as big a deal as his Pirates teammate Barry Bonds. The best thing about his career is that I believe the Mets are STILL paying his contract. JJ Nissen is a bread- baking company, they did several  runs of cards that came in the package with bread. I always noticed that they always airbrushed the team logo off the hat, as they paid the players association, not MLB.

1988 Topps Mini Leaders #47 John Franco

Franco had a long career as a relief pitcher for the Reds and Mets and maybe someone else. He was a good pitcher.

I believe he got into some trouble for some alleged ties to organized crime, but then again, our current President has those also and can't pitch nearly as well.

1990 Topps Stickers

Topps stickers were an interesting thing. I don't know if they ever became popular, maybe they are still around. The idea was that you collect all these stickers and then stick them in the right place in a baseball yearbook you could buy. Then, with the stickers gone, the backing of the card that formerly held the stickers is still a collectible card. Surely whoever came up with this at Topps got a promotion.

Here's an example;
The stickers are Kevin Elster of the New York Mets and Tom Gordon of the Kansas City Royals. The card on the back is Carlton Fisk, Hall of Famer with the Chicago White Sox at the time.

1988 Topps Mini Leaders #59 Lenny Dykstra

I haven't had a lot of time to get out and read all of the awesome blogs I follow for a week or so because I was scanning things like crazy. I started this blog with just a bunch of matchbooks and some old pictures I've been scanning, but last week I finally cleared the decks and got a lot done toward getting rid of those old pockets of junk that accumulate around the house!

So with that, look forward to some really weird scans and pictures in the days and weeks ahead! Totally random bits of ephemera- like this baseball card- it was one of a stack of them I found in a closet. I love to look at old sports stuff like this because it's such an interesting little time capsule.

Like this card- Lenny Dykstra. He hustled hustled hustled on the field and became a big time player and then disappeared, only to resurface as a member of the Howard Stern Whack Pack. This whole set of cards I found was interesting because it's kind of cool to see who we thought were "leaders" in 1988. Some went on to Hall of Fame careers, some went gently into that good night, and some became members of the Whack Pack!
