My step-father was a big smoker and he would buy matchbooks like this one by the box.
There were ALWAYS matchbooks like this one with these very familiar colors and the Shop and Save logo lying around the house.
I believe that these probably came from Bud's Shop and Save in Pittsfield, Maine. I know they are not much for a collector, but the sentimental value for me with this matchbook is off the charts!
I remember my Mom teaching me how to strike and light paper matches (as opposed to wooden ones). I was scared of paper matches (thought I'd get burned) but soon became a pro. Taking up smoking gave me lots of practice. Then BIC lighters came along!
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify, I quit smoking in 1990 after 15 years of it. Finally wised up!
DeleteI smoked for years and quit around 2000. And vividly remember learning to strike matches!
DeleteIs Shop 'n Save still around? Or do you have to get your freshest, juiciest fruits and vegetables somewhere else? I wonder if anyone still advertises on matchbooks or if they know there are better ways to promote their business? OK. No more questions. Take care.
ReplyDeleteShop and save is still around! And I rarely see matches at places like I used to.
